A positioning flight is a cheap seat to a better hub (for example a short hop to JFK or SFO) so the long-haul file is cheaper. A split ticket is two separate purchases that look like one trip. Both can work. Both can fail without a legal connection.
If ticket one is late, ticket two does not have to wait. Overnight at the hub is the adult version of this trick. Same-day legal MCT is not enough across two PNRs. Connections.
You will probably collect and re-check. Budget time and a possible second bag fee. Baggage.
We will not stitch two unrelated cheap legs and call them one protected itinerary. Search each piece, add the USD, and decide if the risk is worth it. We do not ticket either piece.
