Airline baggage policies: personal item, carry-on, and checked bags

Baggage is the policy travellers search most after price. It is also where a low fare becomes expensive. Personal item, carry-on, and checked bag are three different products. Each airline publishes dimensions and weight. Those numbers are not the same as the “included” line on a search result. Azurovia can filter for bags when a seller returns that data. The measuring stick at the gate belongs to the airline.

The three bags, in practice

A personal item is the small bag that fits under the seat. A carry-on is the wheeled bag that goes in the overhead bin. A checked bag is tagged and goes in the hold. Ultra-low-cost carriers often include only the personal item. Many US basic-economy fares include a carry-on but charge for the first checked bag. Some international joint fares include one checked bag even in economy. Never assume. Read the fare brand.

Weight and size

US domestic checked bags commonly allow around 50 lb (23 kg) before overweight fees. Carry-on linear inches are usually in the low 50s including wheels, but “gate-check because the bin is full” is not a refund of a carry-on you already paid for. If you are close to the limit, weigh at home.

Who’s rules apply on a connection

On most itineraries issued as one ticket, through-checked bags follow the most significant carrier’s published allowance, but the first operating airline’s sizer is what you meet at origin. Two tickets means you may collect and re-check, and each segment can charge again. See connecting flights.

Paying for bags

Prepaying online is almost always cheaper than the airport counter, which is cheaper than the gate. Travel-site checkouts sometimes sell a bag as an add-on that still has to match the airline’s product. If the add-on fails to attach, you pay the airline anyway. Keep both receipts.

What Azurovia does

We rank seller totals. Some totals already include a bag; some do not. We do not invent a bag fee. After you ticket with the seller, their bag page and the operating airline’s baggage page are the policy that counts. More on how bags change the fare and sports gear and batteries.
