Boarding groups explained: what the number on your pass means

Boarding groups are how US airlines fill a cabin without a stampede. Your group is printed on the boarding pass after the ticket is issued — by the airline, not by Azurovia. A cheap total can mean a later group, a full bin, and a gate-checked carry-on.

Typical order

Pre-boarding (disabilities, unaccompanied minors) comes first. Then premium cabins, top elite tiers, and often a branded credit-card lane. Main cabin splits into numbered groups. Basic economy and many ultra-low-cost fares board last. Each airline numbers groups differently; the pass is the source of truth, not a blog’s diagram from last year.

Why it affects the “cheap” fare

Basic economy is often the last group. Overhead space is gone. Your carry-on is tagged and you pick it up at the jetway or at baggage claim. That is still legal boarding. It is not a denied boarding.

Families and extra-legroom
