Seat selection policies: what is included and what you pay for

On US airlines, a seat is not automatically “yours” just because you have a ticket. Many economy fares let the airline assign a seat at check-in. Paid selection — window, aisle, extra legroom, exit row — is a separate product with its own rules. Azurovia compares fares. Seat maps and fees live on the airline or travel site after you continue.

What “seat included” usually means

Main cabin and higher often let you pick a standard seat for free, or at least see the map without a fee on every row. Basic economy and many ultra-low-cost fares either block advance selection or charge for every seat, including the middle. Elite status, certain credit cards, and branded fares can unlock free standard seats even when the base fare does not.

Exit rows and extra-legroom

Exit rows have legal requirements: you must be willing and able to assist in an evacuation, meet age minimums, and usually cannot sit there with an infant. Extra-legroom rows are inventory the airline prices dynamically. A $19 seat on a Tuesday can be $89 on a Friday. That fee is almost always collected by the operating airline, even if you bought the ticket on a travel site.

Families and adjacent seats

US carriers have faced pressure to seat young children next to an accompanying adult without extra fees. Policies still differ by airline and by how full the flight is. Book early, add children’s ages correctly, and if the map splits you, call the operating airline — not Azurovia — before you pay for extra-legroom just to sit together.

When you can choose

Advance selection is usually available after the ticket is issued, up to check-in. Some fares lock the map until 24 hours before departure. Gate agents can still move people for weight-and-balance or aircraft swaps. A paid seat is not a guarantee if the equipment changes; airlines typically re-accommodate, but the contract of carriage controls refunds of seat fees.

What to do on Azurovia

Filter for cabin, then open the seller. If sitting together or an aisle is non-negotiable, read whether the fare includes a standard seat before you click. A slightly higher total that includes selection can beat a “cheap” basic fare plus two paid seats. We do not assign seats.
