Bags change the total more than the calendar does

On short US hops, a checked bag can cost as much as a fare difference between two sellers. On transatlantic trips the gap is larger. If you always check a bag, filter for baggage on results, then read the seller’s bag table before you pay.

Personal item versus carry-on versus checked

Ultra-low-cost carriers often include only a small personal item. A standard carry-on is an add-on. Full-service airlines may include a carry-on and still charge for the first checked bag in basic economy. The “cheap” card is only cheap if it matches how you pack. Round-trip math

Bag fees usually apply in both directions. A $30 one-way gap that requires a $60 bag each way is not a saving. Compare the itinerary you will actually fly, with the bags you will actually take.
