How far in advance to book US flights

There is no single “book 73 days ahead” number that beats live search. US domestic leisure fares often settle in a window of a few weeks to a few months. Transatlantic and transpacific leisure usually wants more time, especially in summer. Holidays want the earliest honest booking you can commit to.

Domestic

If dates are firm, search now, set a price alert, and buy when the total looks like the bottom of the recent range — not when a social post says “today only.” Waiting for a last-minute dump on a full Friday is how people pay more.

International

Summer Europe from the US is not a last-minute market for families. Shoulder months can still reward an earlier purchase. Passports and authorizations have their own lead times — documents.

Last-minute

Sometimes a midweek empty plane dumps seats. Sometimes the only thing left is a high basic-economy seat with a connection. Search last-minute if you are flexible; do not plan a wedding weekend on it. See last-minute flights.
