US holiday airfares are not a mystery. They are concentrated demand on a small number of days. The expensive peaks

Thanksgiving: the Wednesday before and the Sunday after are the worst. Christmas Eve through New Year’s Day, especially the 23rd–26th and January 1–2, behave the same. July 4 week, Memorial Day weekend, and Labor Day weekend fill coastal and family routes. Easter and Passover weeks move with the calendar; they still spike.

School holidays that act like federal ones

Spring break is not one week. It is a smear of March and early April depending on the district. Presidents’ Day weekend, MLK weekend, and some winter breaks load Florida, the Caribbean, and ski cities. See spring break and peak dates.

How to search a holiday

Pick the trip you actually need. Then search one day earlier outbound and one day later inbound. If the total drops more than the extra hotel, take it. If you can travel the Tuesday before Thanksgiving instead of Wednesday, you are not “gaming the system” — you are leaving the peak file.
